All Aboard for a Scenic Journey Through the Smokies on Historic Locomotive #1702!
June 9 2026, 04:12

There’s nothing quite like the roar of a steam engine climbing rugged mountain ridges, surrounded by pine-clad peaks and rushing creeks. At the George L. Carter Chapter of the NRHS, we’re proud to present Steam in the Smokies—a breathtaking rail journey that carries you deep into the heart of Southern Appalachia aboard a meticulously restored historic train.

Departing Johnson City at 7:00 AM, this unforgettable excursion whisks you to the charming town of Bryson City, North Carolina. You'll travel as rail passengers did a century ago, pulled by the legendary 2-8-2 Mikado #1702, one of the most iconic locomotives in Southern rail history. The full 4.5-hour, 44-mile roundtrip journey winds through the rugged beauty of Nantahala Gorge, where steel rails meet wild nature.

As the train follows the serpentine path of Alarka Creek and skirts the emerald shores of Fontana Lake, you’ll witness scenery few have the privilege to see. Feel the rumble crossing the towering Fontana Trestle, then enjoy a one-hour layover at the Nantahala Outdoor Center—perfect for stretching your legs, grabbing a bite, or simply soaking in the mountain air.

After your layover, return to the Bryson City Depot with time to explore before dinner. We’re thrilled to offer complimentary admission to the Lionel Train Museum, where the magic of model railroading comes alive. Then, reboard for the 6 PM departure back to Johnson City, arriving around 8 PM—carrying memories forged by fire, steam, and the spirit of railroading heritage.
